Dipole Moment of Condensing Monomers: A New Parameter Controlling the Ion-Induced Nucleation

چکیده
016101-1 Many chemically active, hazardous, and toxic substances have a high dipole moment, and they interact strongly with the charged particles and molecular ion clusters. A new nucleation model considering the contribution of the dipole-charge interaction to the ion-induced nucleation rates is developed, with the dipole moment of the condensing monomers as a new parameter. It is shown that in the polar vapors the influence of the dipole-charge interaction on the nucleation rates may be much stronger than the Thomson effect. The new model is an extension of the classical ion-induced nucleation theory, and can explain the deviation between the experimental data and the predictions of the classical ion-induced nucleation theory.

Sulfuric acid is a primary atmospheric nucleation precursor, with the ability to form stable aqueous hydrogen-bonded clusters/complexes. The electrical dipole moment of such clusters/complexes is important for ion-induced nucleation, largely controlled by dipole-charge interaction of airborne ions with vapor monomers and pre-existing clusters. Although experiments typically trace a single lowes...
متن کاملUptake of neutral polar vapor molecules by charged clusters/particles: Enhancement due to dipole-charge interaction
[1] Recently proposed ion-mediated nucleation theory suggests that the enhanced uptake of neutral polar molecules by the charged clusters as a result of dipole-charge interaction may be critical to the nucleation of particles in the atmosphere. A rigorous parameterization of the enhancement effect of dipole-charge interaction on the growth of charged clusters is presented and the important para...

Classical trajectory (Monte Carlo) calculation is used to calculate collision rate constants of ion-quadrupolar molecule interactions for the H¯+C2H2 system. The method presented here takes into account the effect of the induced dipole-induced dipole potential on ion-quadrupolar molecule collision rate constants. It is also assumed that the colliding particles have a d...
